Evaluating PGHPF on the Cray T3D/T3E EPCC-TR98-02

At present, EPCC has access to the Portland Group’s HPF compiler, PGHPF, on the Cray T3D and T3E and on our workstation cluster. We evaluate certain aspects of the compiler which are specific to user’s programs, as opposed to standard benchmarking routines. This work was done in support of the MHD Consortium (led by Dr. Alan Hood) and was funded by the UK’s High Performance Computing Initiative. The routines investigated include an "all-to-all" broadcast, a randomised "look-up" table and referencing values of neighbouring points on a regular grid. Various styles of HPF programming are considered, such as CSHIFT verses FORALL, F77 verses F90 syntax, and also employing different combinations of PGHPF compiler flags. Furthermore, we compare the T3D alternative data parallel model: CRAFT, with PGHPF/craft on the T3E. It is clear that the choice of programming style depends strongly on the size of the simulation and on the number of processors utilised. Finally, we comment on the gain in speed for compilation and execution of the T3E, over the T3D, for three MHD programs.
